We Audited 50 Stores. Here’s What 90% Got Wrong About SEO

shares

“Good SEO is not about tricking Google. It’s about partnering with Google to provide the best search results for users.”
– Phil Frost

As a leading SEO company working with over 100+ premium D2C brands, Tech Wishes recently ran a deep SEO audit across 50 Shopify stores — some built in-house, others by freelancers or even big agencies. The goal? To understand what eCommerce businesses are getting right (or wrong) about SEO in 2025.

90% of stores are unknowingly hurting their discoverability. The good news? These issues are fixable — if you know what to look for.

Let’s break down the real-time stats, mistakes, and what SEO experts like us recommend for long-term organic growth.

The SEO Slip-Ups: What 90% Got Wrong

Here’s what we found across the 50 audits:

  1. Poor Keyword Targeting (92%)

Most stores either:

  • Stuffed irrelevant keywords in product descriptions

  • Focused only on brand-specific terms (which already rank)

  • Ignored high-converting long-tail keywords like “black cotton polo t-shirt under ₹999”

Data Byte: Only 8% of stores used buyer-intent keywords on product pages.
Example: Ranking for “shirts” means fighting with H&M and Myntra. But “oversized pastel shirt for men India” is a goldmine — low competition, high conversion.

2. Missing Alt Tags on Product Images (87%)

Visual commerce is huge, but 87% of stores skipped adding descriptive alt tags, losing out on Google Image Search traffic.

Trivia: Over 22% of all web searches happen on Google Images.
Yet, only 6 out of 50 stores had meaningful alt text on 80% of their product images.

3. Cannibalised Collections (74%)

Multiple collections with overlapping content were causing internal competition. For instance, “Casual Shirts” and “Printed Shirts” often had the same products and meta descriptions.

Impact: Cannibalisation confuses Google about which page to rank.

4. Technical SEO Issues (66%)

From broken links to improper URL structures and no sitemap submission, two-thirds of the stores had tech stack issues dragging them down.

Common Issues:

  • Multiple H1 tags on one page

  • Slow mobile page speed (especially due to oversized images)

  • Missing canonical tags

The Winning 10%: What the Best SEO Company Practices Look Like

The top 10% of stores nailed these elements — no surprise, they’re also ranking for super competitive keywords.

Here’s what they got right:

1. Intent-Led Content

They didn’t just write “blogs.” They created keyword clusters, buyer guides, and product comparison content.

Example: Instead of “Top 5 Shirts This Summer,” they wrote “Best Men’s Cotton Shirts in India Under ₹1500 – Fabric Tested!”

2. Strategic Internal Linking

They interlinked product pages with blogs and collection pages with filters using keyword-optimised anchor text.

These stores saw up to 27% higher average session duration.

  1. Mobile SEO Optimisation

With Shopify themes often bloated with scripts, these stores prioritised load speed.

Google Benchmarks:

  • 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load

  • The top stores loaded in 1.8–2.3 seconds on 4 G.

4. Schema Markup

Stores that implemented Product Schema, Review Schema, and Breadcrumb Schema saw better CTRS (click-through rates).

Fact: Schema-rich results can increase CTR by 30–50%.

Why Do So Many Brands Get SEO Wrong?

  • SEO is not plug-and-play. It’s not a one-time fix. It needs continuous data-driven updates.

  • Themes are not optimised for SEO by default. Most Shopify themes are designed visually, not for search.

  • Lack of expert help. Brands either use DIY SEO checklists or hire generic agencies that don’t specialise in e-commerce.

And that’s exactly why brands need to work with a specialised SEO agency like Tech Wishes.
